Self-care is essential for educators! During the pandemic, educators were praised for their efforts and dedication as a result of parents and guardians from all walks of life being called upon to engage in the education of their children, unlike any other time in history! When schools reopened, self-care for educators was strongly encouraged due to the rapid pace of professional development for instructional technology integration, COVID-19-related health concerns, and teacher burnout resulting from teaching their own children while performing their duties as a teacher working from home.
Sadly, as masks, travel, and other restrictions/bans became less restrictive, self-care in several districts moved to the back burner. Some districts began to implement stricter attendance policies due to increased teacher absences from personal and family sickness, exposure to COVID, teacher burnout, and the increase of teachers and administrators being required to sub for absent colleagues. The appearance of a lack of concern for adult self-care in education is increasingly contributing to what is becoming a great mass exodus as the number of educators leaving the field of education grows exponentially.
The following individuals and organizations have been great supports of Dr. Washington as she has advocated for quality education and engagement of all stakeholders in the education process. Feel free to consider the following individuals in your comprehensive self-care plan regarding relationships, spiritual growth, career transitions, leadership development, and physical well being!
